All low carb dieters will realize something simple. Dieting is not a quick weight loss solution; it is a way of life.
You’ll constantly try to substitute your favorite foods for the “low carb” option. I’ve enjoyed potato chips as a kid, so I’ve always been on the hunt for great low carb chips.
What’s great about hunting for healthy chips is that the available options are plentiful and delicious. I have been checking out low carb chips to satisfy my cravings for something crunchy in my mouth. And no, don’t tell me to eat celery sticks. Celery will just not do the job, and I will probably end up eating everything else with a bag of Lays too.
I do not know about you, but when I want to eat chips, it is hard to eat 2 chips or 4 chips. I can do that at a Mexican restaurant, to stay away from the greasy corn chips. However, when looking for a delicious low carb chip substitute I would prefer one in which I can eat a small bag without feeling like Oliver Twist standing in line for seconds.
How Many Net Carbs Are in Regular Chips?
Let me set up a reference frame first. Before I went low carb, this used to be my favorite chip. Tostitos 100% white corn whole grains Restaurant style Tortilla Chips.
1 oz. = 28.34 grams = roughly 7 chips. This has:
- Net Carb count of 18 grams
- 140 Calories
- 115 mg of sodium
- Polyunsaturated fat 3 grams
- Monounsaturated fat 2 grams
And for once, do you think I really ate 7 chips? When I think of the damage this has done to my metabolism, I feel ill.
However, I count my carbs and my chips now. Here are some of my current low carb chip favorites.
My Top 5 Favorite Low Carb Chips
Net Carb Count: 12 grams per serving
My favorite is Trader Joe’s Ridge cut Sweet Potato chips. 16 chips make up 1 serving. That’s a lot more than the 7 chips in a Tostitos serving! When I eat Trader Joe’s, I feel like I can munch on a full snack, and not just eat a few table scraps. That’s why this has become my favorite snack when I get a hankering for chips. A serving of 16 chips has the following nutrition:
- Net carb of 12 grams (33% lower than Tostitos!)
- 160 Calories
- 50 mg of sodium
- 160 Cal
- 11 grams of total fat
- No unsaturated fat
Net Carb Count: 3 grams per serving
Skinny Crisps Low Carb Gluten Free Chips comes in second. A serving size is 1 oz. and has 3 grams of net carbs. My favorite flavor is toasty onion. Ingredients include Almonds (in case you have nut allergies), chickpea flour, golden flax seeds, dehydrated onion, olive oil, sea salt and turbinado. I love it when I understand the names of ingredients. Who wants to eat food with weird, chemical names listed on it?
Net Carb Count: 1 gram per serving
Just The Cheese Crunchy Baked Cheese Chips are my third favorite low carb chip. I cannot pick a favorite flavor, as I love them all. These are delicious and unbelievably, a serving has just 1 gram of net carb. I also love that this brand spoils me with flavor choices.
- White Cheese
- Sour Cream and Onion
- Herb Garlic
- And many more!
Net Carb Count: 8 grams per serving
Trader Joe’s Zesty Nacho Kale Chips comes in at a close fourth in my list of tasty low carb chips. Don’t get me wrong, fourth place is still really good! While my favorite Trader Joe’s chips are the sweet potato flavor, I always love to buy the kale chips to mix things up. The taste is great and they’re actually lower on carbs and calories than both Tostitos and Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Chips. It has:
- 8 grams of net carbs
- 150 Calories
- 220 mg of sodium
- 6 grams of protein per 1 oz. bag
Net Carb Count: 14 grams per serving
Popchips are a well-known brand of healthy chips. I first tried these out when I picked them up at CostCo. Popchips are a healthy, potato chip substitute. They never fry them or bake them, or add any weird ingredients. Their texture is like a mix between your normal potato chips and a rice cake. But the taste is amazing. I especially love their BBQ flavor!
If you’re still looking for something crunchy to munch on, you may want to consider some healthy crackers, too!
